Kelowna’s biggest backyard bash has come and gone, once again helping us kiss summer 2019 goodbye.

Denim on the Diamond (DOTD) took over King’s Stadium on Saturday afternoon for the second time, bringing it with it all of the things that make Kelowna the best place to embrace the summer season.

The sophomore of the event sold-out by the time gates opened, meaning the who diamond was buzzing from 2 pm till the end of the night with like-minded people who shared a love of all things music, supporting their community and denim.

“It is really a community event that brings together all demographics of people and all genres of music, it has something for everybody,” said co-organizer Mitch Carefoot.

The above statement does an incredible job at summarizing DOTD, as the event truly does welcome one and all regardless of age, race, gender or music taste.

Centred around being a wicked one-day music festival, DOTD does an awesome job at bringing in top-notch performers and providing a one-of-a-kind opportunity for rising local bands. 

Country acts made up most of the roster with the James Barker Band and Madeline Merlo headlining and Leaving Thomas in addition to The Katherines acting as prime support.

However, the music didn’t end there. Diversity ran rampant with the addition of The Harpoonist and The Axe Murderer, Lucky Monkey and Kelowna’s newest duo Mabaleka.

Whether it was pouring rain or the crowd was doused with beams of sunlight, attendees never stopped dancing — mustering up infectious energy you had to experience to understand. 

While the music is without a doubt a major highlight of the fest, it is not the only draw as DOTD makes it a mandate of their to help make music more accessible to the community 365 days of the year.

“Bringing people together and showcasing the power of music is really what we are trying to do here,” said event co-organizer Kurt Jory. 

Kurt and Mitch wanted to give back to those within our community who need it most, so they decided to partner up with Music Heals this year to ensure a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales go right back into Kelowna.

Music Heals gives various community organizations the opportunity to utilize music therapy in their everyday practices helping those who may suffer from severe anxiety, depression of even dementia benefit from the healing properties of music.

The giving back doesn’t end there, DOTD is also a huge supporter of local businesses as each vendor present had ties to the Okanagan. 

From BC Tree Fruits Cider and Renegade Food Truck on-site to provide delicious treats to Okanagan Lifestyle and Fleek Factory ready to provide some stellar merch, smaller Kelowna businesses were represented in abundance.

We’ve already touched on this but truly, the event wouldn’t be as rad as it is without the hundreds of dedicated attendees that turn up to support it. 

Ready to get rowdy, everyone turned up doused in denim or plaid from head to toe and danced throughout the entire day with huge smiles on their faces, making the most of the last Saturday of summer vacay.
