A decade-long tradition continued this past weekend at the College Heights Community Association softball league annual Icebreaker tournament.

Players ranging from their late teens to their early 60’s braved the wind and rain for their chance to place their name on the coveted season opener trophy.

After three exhausting days and dozens of ball games, the Wood Wheaton Brew Jays and Cutbanks Auto Body headed into Sunday’s final to battle it out for the top spot.

Heavy on the sticks and tight on defence, the Cutbanks batted their way past the Brew Jays with a final score of 8-2.

And although fun is the main reason each player comes out year after year, the tournament has become so much more than just a ball game.

It’s become a place for neighbours to connect, friends to reunite and kids to watch their heroes.

“This association really ties the community together,” says league organizer Mike Sekulic. “We really are just one big family down here on the fields.”
