It was one of those nights where you just wanted to be curled up on the couch with a fire roaring and a good TV show on.

That wasn’t an option for members of the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue, however, as they were dispatched to the Greystokes area to rescue an injured snowmobiler.

The man was injured after colliding with a tree hard enough that it cracked his helmet.

“Fortunately he was with some other riders and one of them had an emergency locator beacon,” said search manager Duane Tresnich.

“They called for help and then transported the injured rider 800 metres to the Kelowna Snowmobile Club’s Hilton Hut.”

Helicopters were unable to fly because of the inclement weather, so COSAR was tasked with extracting the man from the area.

Three members went in on snowmobiles, while another two rode the tracked-equipped UTV to the hut.

Access was difficult due to the deep powder, but they were able to connect with the injured rider and the other riders he was with.

They made it out of the bush around 10 pm and the injured man was transported into a waiting ambulance on Forest Service Road 201 near the Big White access road.

Thankfully, the rider had met up with the other riders after starting the day on his own, otherwise this incident may have had a much worse ending.
