Hwy 1 is about to get wider, but it’ll come at the expense of some delays this summer.

Crews have begun construction to widen the highway to four lanes around Forde Station Road, about 22 kilometres northwest of Golden.

"The Government of Canada is making unprecedented investments in infrastructure, to promote economic growth and create middle-class jobs across the country," said Amarjeet Sohi, federal minister of infrastructure.

"Widening this stretch will not only increase driver safety, but also help ensure residents in the region enjoy a high quality of life for years to come."

The work includes widening about 2.5 km of Hwy 1 to four lanes, as well as improving access to the commercial vehicle safety enforcement inspection station.

It’s the first of many four-laning projects that will be done between Kamloops and the Alberta border in the next three years.

Barrie Mackay Contracting Ltd. of Cranbrook was awarded the project’s $10.3-million contract on Dec. 20, 2017, which will include work opportunities for the Shuswap Indian Band.

The total estimated project will cost around $19.4 million, with the Government of Canada contributing up to $7.27 million and the province covering the rest.

During construction, drivers can expect some delays, and are reminded to obey construction speed zones and follow traffic control at all times.
