The Summerland Steam have served noticed they aren’t conceding anything to the Kelowna Chiefs in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

Despite being stationed seven points back of the Chiefs in the Bill Ohlhausen Division standings (they’ve played five more games), the Steam looked every bit a legitimate contender on Friday in a 6-3 victory over the host Chiefs at the Rutland Arena.

Photo Credit: Lorne White/KelownaNowNathan Driver scored twice in his Kelowna Chiefs debut.The South Okanagan visitors (11-11-0-0-3) fired 46 shots on Kelowna’s Braeden Mitchell and boasted a 15-4 shot margin in the third period on the way to  putting the breaks on a three-game losing streak and posting their first win in two tries against the Chiefs who fell to 16-4 on the season.

Despite the territorial advantage, it wasn’t until 18:01 of the third that the Steam (Cody Swan) scored the winning goal on Mitchell. It was Swan’s second on a hat-trick night, his third goal being one of two empty-netters for Summerland.

Morey Babakaiff, Cory Loring and Lane French added a goal apiece for the Steam, who got a winning performance (31 saves on 34 shots) from goaltender Eric Scherger.

Swan went on to score three times and add a pair of assists.Playing in his first game with the Chiefs, 18-year-old Winnipeg native Nathan Driver — who played in both Superior International Junior Hockey League and the Manitoba Junior Hockey League earlier this season — scored a pair of goals in losing cause. One came while the Chiefs were shorthanded in the third period and the other on a power play in the final frame.

Ty Marchant, with his first in his 20th game of the season, opened the scoring for the Chiefs in a second period that ended 1-1 and set up the seven-goal outburst in the third.

The Chiefs will attempt to get back on the winning track tonight at the Rutland Arena when they play host to the Grand Forks Border Bruins (8-13-0-0-2) beginning at 7 p.m.
