There’s still a lot of doubt whether the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo will take place, but even if they do, Canada will not be a part of it.

Tonight, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) announced that Canada will not be sending any athletes to the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer due to the risks associated with COVID-19.

In the same announcement, the COC called upon the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to postpone the Olympics for one year.

“We offer them our full support in helping navigate all the complexities that rescheduling the Games will bring,” said a statement from the COC.

“While we recognize the inherent complexities around a postponement, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our athletes and the world community.”

The COC said it wasn’t solely about the athletes health, but about the health of the general public and following the public health advice that all Canadians are urged to follow.

Earlier today, the IOC doubled down on its stance that cancelling the 2020 Summer Olympics “would not solve any of the problems or help anybody.”

“Therefore, cancellation is not on the agenda,” said an IOC statement.

However, the IOC has started to commit resources to scenario-planning for the Olympics given the serious nature of the COVID-19 pandemic that is sweeping the globe.
