This is some breaking news!

  • California Coastal

I have always loved visiting California, and nothing has changed after recently spending some time down south.

Maybe it was all the sunshine and giant succulents, or maybe it was the margaritas, either way, I didn’t want to leave!

I especially love the “California Coastal” design style, not to be confused with the classic “Coastal” design (which typically has an overall nautical theme or sand & seashell theme).

California Coastal is a style of it’s own; it’s a combination of ocean elements and natural pieces, mixed with a laid back surf style, paired with worldly eclectic pieces that add in a touch of sophistication.

With the wine, movie, and tech industry following in California’s foot steps, the Okanagan is the perfect place to bring some of this laid back design approach north of the border.

How to create the modern eclectic Cali vibe in the Okanagan:

    1. Warm White Paint

A good white paint provides a neutral background for your furniture, art, accessories and architectural details to be displayed.

    2. Old World Details

It can be rustic beams, spanish tiles, an antique piece of furniture or a vintage rug. Adding in something with history gives your space some worldy wisdom.

    3. Surf Elements

What is the West Coast without water? You can bring it in with dark blue textiles, accessories, backsplash tile, cabinetry or art work but you don’t have to add in typical “blue” to get the ocean feel.

A piece of driftwood on a coffee table or hanging a surfboard in at the end of a long hallway, whether you surf or not, will remind you of the sand in your toes and it can also be a great conversation piece.

    4. Natural Elements

Seagrass baskets, woven furniture or sisal carpets are a common theme in this design, as are succulents and cacti.

Drought resistant plants grow like weeds in the south and if you are not great with plants they are easy to keep alive (only water when dry!). If plants just aren’t your thing, a piece of art with palm trees can make you feel like you’re close to the real thing!

    5. Classic Pieces

Keeping the large pieces (sofas, flooring and cabinets, etc.)classic, allow for the accessories and eclectic elements to stand out and give added interest to the space.
