The number are out and they show that B.C. spent some serious cash this summer.

Moneris released it’s third quarter Canadian spending report on Thursday morning, which showed that Canadian spending rose 5.05% on a year-over-year basis.

Leading the way in that regards was B.C., where spending increased 6.32% since the same period last year.

That was the highest increase across Canada by a good amount, as Manitoba and Ontario demonstrated the second highest increases at 5.62%.

The highest growth for B.C. came on hotels, where spending increased more than 10% compared to the third quarter of 2016.

Household items and spending at restaurants weren’t far behind with 8.91% and 8.38% increases respectively.

Spending on groceries and alcohol, as well as at drug stores, also saw significant growth on a year-over-year basis.

Moneris’ spending report showed a couple of interesting trends as well.

One of those trends is that summer spending from foreign visitors to Canada was up 12.16% since the summer of 2016, something B.C. didn’t see as much of due to major flooding and wildfires.

Also showing major growth was contactless payments, which continue to surge as tapping to pay becomes more and more common.

Compared to the same period in 2016, contactless payment increased by an astonishing 51.53% in 2017.
