Question:
I am responding to the KelownaNow article. I am in need of some help with choosing planters for my rooftop patio. I would like to do something to create some privacy, yet not to take away from the view. I'll attach a few photos of areas that could use some planters. I hope to be chosen as the featured project as I would love some free advice. I am working on a small budget and I am not a green thumb at all.

First, can I start by saying how cute that dog is! Okay, back to the design stuff
This is a great outdoor rooftop space to work with! The privacy questions are common when living in close proximity to your neighbours. It can be a challenge accomplishing privacy while not disrupting the views. Colleen is on the right track with planters because they are versatile, offer privacy but can still be relatively inexpensive if you DIY and aren’t afraid to get your hand dirty.
Narrow rectangular pots behind the sectional don’t take up a ton of patio space. Adding in some medium to tall grass is a great option as it doesn’t need much maintenance or a green thumb to keep alive. Grass also wouldn’t impede the view, can add the much-needed privacy and perhaps some noise dampening.
If you want a bit more privacy on either side where you look right into your neighbour's patio, consider something a bit more structural, which if you’re on a budget, Pinterest is a great source for DIY projects. Try something tall, with slats so it’s not completely solid wood. Remeber that the wider the spaces between the slats the more view you’ll keep. This concept can add another element of privacy and make your space feel more intimate and secluded. If you like the contemporary look of slats then add something low to the planters like Box Wood or again easy to maintain grasses. If you like a bit more traditional or even an eclectic look use a climbing plant or add planters and baskets to the slats.
