  • UPDATE: Westwood fire near Penticton now 100% contained

    (UPDATE: 1:15 p.m.) – The small wildfire on Westwood Road near Penticton is now 100% contained, according to the City of Penticton.

    Fire crews are still mopping up the fire and putting out any remaining hot spots, and they'll remain on scene to monitor the fire overnight.

    The Penticton Fire Department says that no homes were lost, but there was roof damage to a pair of houses.

    Anyone that was evacuated during the fire will be allowed to return home this afternoon.

    (UPDATE: 11:25 a.m.) – The City of Penticton says that the West Bench fire is being managed effectively and has not spread beyond the current fire area.

    "Two homes have been impacted, but the damage has been limited to the roof of both homes," an update from the City's Facebook page reads. "Tactical evaluation remains in effect. Local and regional firefighters remain on scene with the support of a helicopter."

    (Original story: 10:45 a.m.) – A small wildfire is burning just west of Penticton in the West Bench area.

    The Penticton Fire Department and the BC Wildfire Service are responding to the blaze, which is estimated at only 0.5 hectares.
     


     

    There are both firefighters on the ground and air support currently working on the fire.

    At this time the fire is not spreading, according to the BC Wildfire Service, but smoke is visible from Highway 97 and Penticton.
     


    According to the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen Emergency Management Program, there have been some evacuations.

    Evacuees are to register at the Reception Centre at the Penticton Community Centre.
     


    The BC Wildfire Service also reported that one structure may have been damaged.
