UPDATE: Avalanche control work to close Hwy 1 and Hwy 3 Tuesday evening

(UPDATE: Jan. 6 @ 3:25 pm) – Two additional highway closures are happening Tuesday evening to allow for avalanche control work.

In addition to the closure between Revelstoke and Golden, which will last until about 7 pm, a section of Highway 1 will also be closed west of Revelstoke.

That closure will be in place from 4-6 pm between Three Valley Avalanche Gate and Clanwilliam OH Bridge.

A detour will not be available.

Meanwhile, in the Kootenays, Highway 3 will be closed through the Kootenay Pass from 5-8 pm.

That closure will be in place between the West Avalanche Gate and the East Avalanche Gate.

An alternate route will be available from Nelson to Creston via Highway 3A and the Kootenay Lake Ferry, but that will add an additional time of about two and a half hours.

(Original story: Jan. 6 @ 9:27 am) – Anyone planning on travelling the Trans-Canada Highway today will want to consider rescheduling their plans.

Highway 1 will be closed between Revelstoke and Golden to allow for avalanche control work.

The closure starts at 11 am but eastbound commercial vehicles will be held in Malakwa beginning at 10 am.

The highway is expected to reopen around 7 pm on Tuesday.

A detour will only be in place for passenger vehicles.

All motorists are advised to keep an eye out for traffic control personnel.

A snowfall warning is in place for Hwy 1 between Eagle Pass and Rogers Pass with 25 centimetres of snow expected Tuesday evening.
