Everyone knows there are a ton of incredible places to eat and drink in Kelowna, but there are also some outstanding spots within an hour's drive of our amazing city.
So whether you're on your way in or out of town, or looking for a fun destination spot, there are plenty of excellent options, and here are a few favourites with something for everyone!
Ratio Coffee
This is one extra-special coffee shop located in Vernon, about 45 minutes from downtown Kelowna. They have excellent coffee of course, but they have more than that. Every day they have a featured pastry, and each days' offering is so tempting you'll want to make the trip every day of the week.
Find the full list on their website, but you should know that Fridays are famous for their fresh donuts! One look at these iced beauties and you'll be daydreaming about it the whole drive there. If you don't have a sweet tooth, check them out on a Friday or Saturday night for fresh homemade pizzas and local beer, cider and wine!
Tickleberry's
The name alone is enough to excite anyone's inner child. Just over an hour outside Kelowna in Okanagan Falls, this is an ice cream shop you don't want to miss. They've been making their ice cream in-house for three years now, and with an overwhelming amount of flavours they're a favourite for anyone passing by (and worth it for the special trip).
Try “Maple Bacon” or “Break Up Tub” (dark chocolate base, white chocolate chips and fudge swirl). Their reputation for deliciousness precedes them and it's no surprise they have a huge fan base of people old and young!
Prague Cafe
Here's a spot with a special European twist! The Prague Cafe, a 55 min from downtown Kelowna in Penticton, specializes in delicacies from the Czech Republic using timeless and authentic recipes.
Have a traditional simple breakfast with meats and cheeses, or indulge in a piece of traditional honey cake as you take in the lake view. You can even get homemade apple strudel and küchen (fruit cake) just like Grandma use to make. It's much easier to drive 55 minutes than fly across the globe to "Czech" out the real city of Prague!
Craft Corner Kitchen
Dinner, drinks, a snack or a sweet treat, Craft Corner Kitchen does it all with their signature funky twist. Also located in Penticton, Chef James Holmes creates fresh, seasonal and incredibly delicious soul food that's perfect when you're looking for something outside the box but with comfort food flavours.
The feature board changes daily based on his inspirations, and his whimsical and sometimes over-the-top creations (in a good way!) make the drive out completely worth it. Paired with the casual atmosphere, patio and family style picnic tables within, you'll feel right at home and probably want to try everything on the menu. Don't miss the $5 happy hour!
Dirty Laundry Vineyard
Dirty Laundry is so much more than a vineyard with a catchy name. Located 49 minutes from Kelowna in Summerland, they create excellent wine and they have a fabulous self-serve bistro with an incredible vineyard view.
After enjoying a wine tasting inside or outside, you can select your favourite snacks from the shelves. You even get to stock them all into a picnic basket instead of a shopping basket! Choose from meats, cheeses, sandwiches, crackers, spreads and other tidbits, and then head off to a table to nibble away and enjoy the view. It's casual, classy and convenient all in one!
Kelowna born and raised, Keddy Pavlik of TheTreatLife has been passionate about the local food scene basically since birth. If she's not in the kitchen, you can probably find her at the farmer's market or taking pictures of food. Photo Credit: Jordana Dickson.
