  • 3 Social Distancing Activities for This Season!

It’s not quite time to hit the slopes or lace up the ice skates here in Kelowna but we’ve sure said goodbye to our warm weather! As we look to a socially distanced off-season, here are three ideas to keep the family having fun together.

Horseback Riding with Kelowna Stables at Myra Canyon Ranch

It is exhilarating being on top of a beautiful thoroughbred horse, learning its personality, and trusting him to carry you safely through the forest. It’s even more of an adrenaline rush watching your five year old sit in the saddle!

I was so proud of Ben, who has not ridden a horse since he was just a baby in Petra, Jordan, walk up to the big brown face of his horse, Hank, and give him a treat from his tiny hand.

The bond for them was instant, and Hank safely led Ben and the rest of us, on a journey through the beautiful Myra Canyon Provincial Park.

If you’ve never ridden in the saddle, or if you grew up galloping on one of these majestic animals, a custom ride provides you with a horse, a trail, and a pace that you’ll be comfortable with while having a blast in nature. The horses are playful, I even caught Candyman sticking his tongue out at me!

It felt good to my soul to be out in the hills, with a view of all of Kelowna from 500 meters up, and nothing but the sounds of a swaying tree and hoof beats around me. Our guide had answers to all of our questions, and more impressively, had all the answers to Ben’s questions (if you know any five year olds, then you will know what a feat it is to be on the receiving end of the firing squad that is their curious mind!)

This is an activity especially enjoyed during this season with the beautiful coloring of the forest, and because it can be tricky booking a spot in summer due to the popularity of this activity! Enjoy riding year round, as these horses are equipped with studded winter shoes for snowy trail riding!

    Take a Lesser Known Hike

If you’re tired of your usual hiking trail, try Lebanon Creek Regional Park in the Upper Mission area! Climb Cedar Mountain for a spectacular lake view by day or soak up a beautiful sunset! This gravel trail, linear hike is considered moderate and takes approximately 60 minutes one way. As with any hiking trip in the fall, be bear aware and wear appropriate gear.

Another spectacular option is the lightly traveled Kalamoir Park Loop. A stunning 4.8 km trail to walk or bike with fabulous views of the lake and surrounding parkland. It’s also a lovely spot to get your family holiday photo.

    Bike the Myra Canyon Trestles

Growing up in Kelowna, this was always our prized tourist spot to bring relatives from out-of-town. Now it serves as a great way to spend time with others while social distancing. Walk or bike the trail and observe the view from the most spectacular time of year, autumn. With 18 trestles to take your breath away and two tunnels, you can make a day or afternoon out of visiting all, or just a few, of these historical highlights.

As always, if you are feeling unwell, stay home. Respect others you meet on the trail by giving distance and wearing your mask when possible. Stay happy and healthy out there!
