An Englishman and three computer geeks walk into a yoga studio. What happens next?

KelownaNow sent a squad to Karma Yoga + Fitness to find out.

Jason and Dylan are two genius backend developers for KelownaNow. The perfect weekend for Dylan and Jason includes beer, binge-watching Netflix, and everything computers. Sam is a talented graphic designer for KelownaNow. She is passionate about renovating her house and has an unhealthy obsession with salt and vinegar chips. Vince is KelownaNow’s token Englishman, he describes himself as a ‘superior’ dancer. His girlfriend disagrees, she describes his moves as the ‘bewildered, rusty tin man’.

To say that Jason, Dylan, Sam and Vince were unprepared for Karma Fusion, a fusion of yoga and Navy SEAL suspension training, would be an understatement…

Karma Fusion is hosted by a local studio Karma Yoga + Fitness. Karma Fusion is one of a kind because it fuses yoga with TRX, a suspension training bodyweight exercise. Designed by the Navy SEALs, it develops strength, balance, flexibility and core stability.  Since it’s birth, TRX has been used in many gyms to various levels.

“When we stepped into the studio, I didn’t know what to expect. Kelly, our fitness trainer, was warm, friendly and funny. I was lulled into a state of relaxation” said Sam. “It wasn’t until I placed my legs in the TRX stirrups and tried to plank, that I realized what I'd gotten myself into."

Within moments of entering the class, Jason, Sam, Vince and Dylan were sweating and their muscles were shaking. Yet, the team’s memories of the event are fond, and they include lots of laughing and giggling.

“My favorite exercise was definitely the Sun Salutation” recalls Dylan. “Don’t get me wrong, it was tough, but weirdly enough I actually liked having my ass kicked. I felt like I was accomplishing something. Additionally, I got to watch Jason do the exercise. Now that was funny!”

During the 45 minute class, the team performed a series of exercises from the plank to handstands. All of these exercises could be altered to suit the ability and skill level of participants.

“Jeez. Karma Fusion was difficult but it was definitely doable! My body actually responded well to it. I went home feeling pretty good!” said Jason. “Besides, I was much better than Dylan”.

“The 45-minute class was a workout,” says Vince. “They had us going hard, but it was also pretty damn fun. Kelly created a non-judgemental, relaxed environment so we felt perfectly comfortable doing all the exercises. Even if they were tough!”
