In this episode of Business Matters, presented by Valley First, a division of First West Credit Union, host Rob Cupello is joined by Heather Hunter, wealth planning specialist at Valley First.

"I started as a teller… I wanted to come to the Okanagan because my family was there…and I grew into the financial advisor role" says Hunter of her journey to her current role.

To her, the job is about giving a second opinion "our job is to look at what might be missing… and educate our members on opportunities they may not understand." Though what she loves most is "helping people, that's what brings me joy… it's really gratifying," she says.

While many of us feel we have a general grasp on our finances, we don't know what we're missing until we get a second set of eyes. And in times of volatility like we are experiencing now, it's important to make informed decisions rather than acting on our fear, which Hunter says can be a common response. 

These days it can be easy to let news, or social media dictate the way you view financial goals or investments.

"Sometimes people who haven't lived through what's happening now… [they base] actions and choices on fear" comments Hunter. For those who may identify with the feeling, she recommends booking an appointment with an advisor before taking any drastic action. 

Hunter suggests meeting with you advisor at least once a year, or quarterly if you have an investment portfolio to ensure you're keeping up to date with changes in the market and prioritizing your goals as your financial picture changes.
