Two teens from Mount Douglas High School are the only Canadian entry in the Duck Tape Brand ‘Stuck at Prom’ contest, being held by the duct tape company based out of Avon, Ohio.
Moss Bruton Joe and Riley Woodland spent 186 hours creating these Phoenix inspired prom outfits, in an effort to land themselves $10,000 each. They chose the Phoenix design because the mythical bird symbolizes graduation, rising from the ashes after twelve years of study to finally emerge as the bird of fire.
“We chose black for the death and ashes, gold for the triumphant achievement and purple and prism bringing depth and light,” Moss said in the description. “We wanted something incredibly classy, beautiful, but with an edge. Our eye for detail shows in the intricate Duck Tape designs on the back, front and accessories of our formal wear.”
The pair’s design includes 100’s of tiny phoenix legs cut out of duct tape for Riley’s lapel and Moss’ clutch purse which features the roman numerals for ‘2014’. They even included wire, beads and tape for the talon bracelets and a Duck Tape cell phone case! Moss wore Duck Tape feathers on her fingernails, a prism lily corsage, and the couples’ favourite items, Duck Tape Sticker tattoos.
First, second and third place winners will take home $10,000, $5,000 and $3,000 each respectively, with additional funds also going to the schools of the top three finishers as well.
The Saanich couple made it through to the top 10 finalists, after beating out around 140 other entries. They are still in need of votes if they are going to rise to the top of the Duck Tape fashion world. You can support these Canadian crusaders by voting for them online once a day up until July 8th.
