The entire country was saddened to learn about the passing of Jerry Gadwa over the weekend.

A Bonnyville, Alta. native and member of the Kehewin Cree Nation, Gadwa was in Ontario assisting fire suppression efforts in Red Lake, Ont. when he died suddenly.

Tributes poured in from across the country, thanking Gadwa for his service and his ultimate sacrifice while trying to protect the public.

On behalf of the Government of Alberta, I want to offer our deepest condolences and support to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mr. Gadwa,” said a statement from Rachel Notley, premier of Alberta.

“Mr. Gadwa’s brave and selfless actions will be remembered.”

As sad as Gadwa’s untimely death, it’s made even sadder by the fact that he leaves behind a 10-year-old son, Jeramy.

To help Jeramy deal with this life altering loss, a GoFundMe has been set up in Gadwa’s name.

“With all the emotional pain and stress a death brings financial burdens, we would like to raise money for Jeramy, his son,” reads the description. “To keep with any costs that will incur and help where ever it may be needed.”
