How do you see yourself celebrating your 40th birthday?
Dinner out? A trip to Vegas? A get together with all your friends and family?
For most of us, starting a nearly half-century long running tradition isn’t something we’re planning on doing for our next milestone birthday. But for long-time distance runner, Dick Voneugen, nothing could have seemed more fitting.

Over the weekend, Prince George’s recreational and elite runners travelled to Otway to take part in the annual Dick Voneugen Birthday Fun Run. A birthday celebration where attendees run in kilometres the equivalent of years Voneugen turns that year.
This year’s participants signed up for a whopping 88km journey.
At the tender age of 72, Voneugen retired as a participant in the race but still continues on to be one of the main contributors to the event each year.
You’ll find him at checkpoints along the way where he will distribute energy snacks and hydration for those looking to refuel.

You may very well hear him before anything, as he welcomes each runner around the course with a few bursts of his signature horn.

Not all participants need to partake in the whole 88kms. A few years ago multiple distances were added to make the race more inclusive. You can choose from 7.5km, 19km, 25km, 42.2km and 50km.
The start times vary but the aim is to have everyone finish back at Otway around 4 p.m.
Runners should be prepared and bear aware, bringing along mace and a tired pooch or two.

A fun day and a great tribute to honour the Prince George Sports Hall of Fame member who has spent decades promoting and organizing local events like the Labour Day Classic and the Terry Fox Run.
