After a long day of enjoying the Okanagan summer by cruising along the boardwalk, boating on Okanagan Lake, practicing your golf swing on the signature hole at Black Mountain Golf Course, and vigorously applying sunscreen, there is only one way to cap off a beautiful and fun-filled day. Kicking back on the patio and enjoying some delicious food and a few beverages with some friends is the ultimate ending to a perfect summer day.

A prime location for patio season is the patio at Black Mountain Golf Club’s ‘The Grill”. With breathtaking views and sips and eats that will make your mouth water, the patio at ‘The Grill’ is an ideal spot to spend a few Okanagan summer evenings. But, while enjoying all that patio season has to offer, be sure to follow this patio etiquette guide!
Be Nice to Your Server
You should always treat your server with respect and kindness, but especially on the patio! Remember that while you are cooling down with a nice bellini, your server is trying to do their job while melting in the hot sun for hours! Give them a break!
Dress Appropriately
Those of us lucky enough to spend our summers in the Okanagan are blessed with the opportunity to revel in the sunshine and heat, which typically means that we spend a good chunk of the season wearing few articles of clothing.
While you may spend your day basking in the sun at the beach or out on the boat in your swimsuit, jumping out of the water and onto the patio in the same attire is not appropriate. Save the swim trunks and bikinis for the lake and opt for a cover-up when you head to the patio to enjoy your evening!
Smoking Kills… The Vibe
Although it is not illegal to smoke on an open patio in British Columbia, it does certainly kill the vibe! It is illegal to smoke on patios that are partially or fully enclosed, and it is just not courteous to smoke around other people – especially people that are trying to enjoy delicious food! If you have to, be kind to your patio neighbours and take the cigarettes down the road a bit.

Do Not Feed the Wildlife
While the birds sing a sweet song and adorable squirrels scamper by on the patio, resist the urge to feed the animals! Eating outdoors is bound to invite the noses of wildlife now and then, but feeding these animals off of your plate is a bad idea. Not only does it further invite the animals onto the restaurant’s property, but it can also be harmful to the animals. Save those yummy eats for your own belly!
Turn Down the Volume
Despite being in the great outdoors, when you’re lounging on a patio, your ‘outside voice’ doesn’t really apply. By all means, have a wonderful time and enjoy great company, food, and drink, but be courteous to your patio-mates and keep the volume down. Patios do not have an open invitation to raise your voice, so you should keep your conversation to the same noise levels that you would indoors.
